Ayurveda for Immunity: Techniques for Boosting Your Body’s Natural Defenses

Immunity is the body’s ability to protect itself against diseases and infections caused by harmful pathogens like viruses, bacteria, and parasites. To maintain good health, we need a robust natural defense system. In Ayurveda, ‘Vyadhikshamatva’ or immunity is based on the concept of two types of reserves: inherited and acquired reserves. There are three types of immunity: Sahaja Vyadhikshamatva (inherited), Kalaja Vyadhikshamatva (Temporal strength is based on the division of seasons and person’s age), and Yuktikrita Vyadhikshamatva (acquired through a healthy diet, lifestyle, and general well-being).

Our immunity is influenced by various factors, including our natural body constitution (Prakruti), the health of our Ojas (the essence of our body tissues), Agnibala (digestive power), balance of Doshas, and state of mind (Mansika Doshas). To improve overall health and immunity, Ayurveda recommends following these basic routines:

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day with warm water

According to Ayurveda, drinking a glass of warm water first thing in the morning can aid digestion. This remove toxins, reduce fat deposits, relax muscles, and boost blood flow. It helps to have nourished and rejuvenated skin cells.

  • Practice yoga poses

Yoga can strengthen the respiratory system, stimulate the lymphatic system and bring oxygenated blood to organs for optimal function. It also ower stress hormones that weaken the immune system. Some Yoga Asanas that can boost immunity include Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend), Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog Pose), and Halasana (Plow Pose).

  • Practice Pranayama and meditation

These techniques are powerful tools in Ayurveda for boosting immunity. Pranayama involves breathing exercises that can help improve lung function, increase oxygenation of the blood. It reduces stress hormones that weaken the immune system. Deep breathing exercises like Kapalbhati, Bhastrika, and Anulom Vilom can be particularly effective. Meditation can help reduce stress, encourage relaxation and calm, and have a positive effect on the immune system.

  • Follow a healthy diet

According to Ayurveda, a healthy liver function, good digestion, a strong metabolic fire (Agni), and a balanced endocrine system all contribute to strong immunity. Using spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and garlic in your cooking can help you achieve these goals. Foods that can boost your immune system include Khitchari, oranges, lemons, fresh ginger, turmeric, Tulsi tea, cinnamon, pepper, and fenugreek. Aim to consume hot tea, warm food, ginger, pepper, honey, and turmeric tea, Vitamin C-rich foods, and make lunch your main meal. Also, include good fats such as fish oil, ghee, and coconut oil in your diet.

Along with a balanced diet, getting sufficient sleep is crucial for the health of your immune system. Sound sleep aids in the efficient regeneration of immune cells, and the human immune system releases cytokines, which are proteins that also affect sleep.
