Shalya Chikitsa in Ayurveda

Shalya Tantra is a comprehensive branch of Ayurveda that includes both surgical and non-surgical methods of treatment. The branch has a significant role in the management of traumatic injuries and other surgical conditions. Some of the common treatments used in Shalya Tantra include:

  • Kshara Sutra: Kshara Sutra is a unique technique used in Shalya Tantra for the management of fistula, piles, and other anal disorders. This technique involves the use of a medicated thread made from natural herbs and alkaline compounds.
  • Rakta mokshana (bloodletting): Rakta Mokshana is a procedure in Ayurvedic medicine that involves the cleansing of blood to remove impurities and toxins from the body. According to Ayurveda, impure blood is a major cause of various diseases and disorders in the body. Rakta Mokshana is a specialised technique that involves the removal of small amounts of blood from the body to promote the cleansing of the circulatory system.
  • Agnikarma: Agnikarma is a technique used in Shalya Tantra for the management of chronic pain, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. This technique involves the use of a heated metal rod to cauterise specific points on the body. The heat generated during Agnikarma therapy is believed to stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms, promoting blood flow to the affected area and reducing inflammation and pain. It also helps to stimulate the nervous system and improve the overall functioning of the affected area.
  • Bandaging and Wound Management: Shalya Tantra also includes the management of wounds and injuries. This involves the application of various bandages and dressings to promote healing.
  • Surgical Procedures: Shalya Tantra also includes various surgical procedures, including incisions, excisions, and suturing.
  • Herbal Medicines: Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also an essential part of Shalya Tantra. These medicines are used to promote healing and prevent infections.
